At first glance Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) seems like a violent and dangerous sport, but the reality is that it is not just a sport, but a martial art that combines other styles of martial arts and creates some of the toughest people on the planet. There is a difference between training for a fight and training MMA. MMA training primarily consists of techniques from Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, and Judo.
The training itself requires not only physical stamina, but also mental focus, self-discipline, and respect for your training partners, among other important characteristics. These are characteristics that are important to instill in our children at a young age to prepare them for the realities of being an adult. It creates self-confidence in the individual that is hard to achieve through other activities. The training teaches the student that it is not always about winning or losing, but about your own personal progression and achieving personal goals.
When taught in a controlled environment, MMA training is actually safer than other traditional sports and activities available for kids. Because of its real-world effectiveness and applications, the child is not only learning positive aspects that come from training a martial art, but they are learning a true form of self-defense that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. The physical fitness gained from the training also encourages the child to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and this can carry on to other traditional sports if that is their goal.
